What Is a Dental Crown?

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that completely cover the visible portion of a tooth. Their purpose is to protect and fortify the underlying dentition. For example, they help restore a tooth's shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are used for various purposes, such as repairing broken, cracked, or decayed teeth, covering dental implants, or enhancing the look of misshapen or discolored teeth.
Different materials can be used for dental crowns. In our office, we often use porcelain or EMAX (a specific type of porcelain) because these options are lifelike, durable, and highly functional.
The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The process of getting a dental crown usually requires two appointments. During your initial visit, we will prepare your tooth by removing a portion of its enamel; this is to ensure that your crown will fit well and work in harmony with your natural bite. We administer local anesthesia to make this portion of the process as comfortable as possible. After your tooth is prepared, we will use an advanced scanner to take a digital impression of it.
Based on the information we provide to them, a dental laboratory team will create your custom crown. In the meantime, you should wear a temporary restoration. Once your permanent one is ready, we will verify that it meets our expectations before we attach it to your tooth.
The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

Dental crowns offer a range of outstanding benefits:
- A dental crown can protect your tooth from further damage and decay, allowing it to provide reliable and pain-free function for many years to come.
- It can restore the shape and size of your tooth, allowing you to maintain a natural and comfortable bite.
- Getting a dental crown will improve the appearance of your tooth, giving you a more confident smile. (An EMAX or porcelain crown provides an especially lifelike appearance because these materials are seamlessly shade-matched to blend in with nearby teeth.)
- The use of advanced technology ensures a precise fit, so your crown should feel natural and comfortable.
